OPEN NIGHT PLAYS

Players signing up as an individual may attend Open Night Plays. The Open Night Plays provide an opportunity for players looking for a team to meet each other, for the league organizers to meet the players, and for captains in need of additional players to recruit. There is no cost to attend the open night plays, tennis balls provided, and a player may attend as many as necessary until placed on a team. Players can expect to play games.

Open Play Nights have finished for the 2010 season. 2011 dates will be published in February 2011.

Good luck to all the teams in the playoffs!

Thank you to all the 2010 participants!! (And especially our amazing captains!)

A brief summary of the league is below. For more detail, please refer to our league policy document

What is World TeamTennis?  WTT is co-ed teams competing in a format that consists of 6 no-ad sets. One set each of men’s and women’s doubles followed by men’s and women’s singles, ending with 2 sets of mixed doubles. Total games won from all sets determines the winner. Substitution & coaching are allowed.

What is a WTT team?  A team must have two men and two women, as a minimum, 12 players maximum. This allows for periods of rest and missing matches. One player may be replaced on a team roster due to injury, etc. New players must complete at least 2 matches during the regular season in order to be eligible for playoffs, finals and advancing to WTT Regional and National events.

Who can play?
Adults (18 & over) may sign up as a team or as an individual. Visit www.wtt.com to register. See calendar of Open Night Plays for players looking for a team. Players registering after the season begins will be added to a substitute list.

When do leagues start?  Matches begin first week of June. Typically regular season matches finish mid August. Some division's play offs and finals may take place after Labor Day, 2009. Matches begin at 6:30 p.m. 3.0 and 4.0 matches will be played on Tuesdays. 3.5 matches will be played on Wednesdays. 4.0+ matches will be played on Thursdays. No matches week of July 5, otherwise be prepared to play every week.

Sign-Up Deadline:
Teams must be registered by Friday, May 21, 2010. Players can be added to rosters during the season. Players entering the league without a team will be placed on the substitution list. Visit www.wtt.com to register!
See calendar of Open Night Plays (at left) for players looking for a team.

What Divisions (levels of play) are offered?  3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.0+. The 4.0+ division is new in 2010. Players in this division must have at least a 4.0 rating. If a player uses a self rating, player history may be required.

Determining Team Rating
The average NTRP rating of the top two men and top two women players on your team determines the team rating. You may not have more than two players whose ratings are over the team level.

       Example:
  Joe- 4.5 Mary- 4.0
  Tom- 4.0 Jill-3.5
  Bill- 4.0 Gail- 3.5
  Joe- 4.0 Mary- 3.5
  Jim- 3.5 Joan- 3.5

The best two men and two women are: 4.5 + 4.0 + 4.0 + 3.5 = 16. 16 divided by 4 equals 4.0.

This team could register for the 4.0 division or a higher division. A team consists of a minimum of two men and two women. Although the limit to the number of team members is twelve, the suggested number of players is three men and three women. Click here to determine your NTRP level.
Portland World Team Tennis Team Rating Rules are not the same as WTT. Please disregard any information about determining your team rating at www.wtt.com. If your team is interested in competing beyond the local level, be aware of the differences and requirements for national events. Your players must compete in at least two matches at the local level to be eligible for national and national qualifier events.

Where do we play?
Potential summer locations include: Portland Tennis Center, Washington Park Rose Garden, Sellwood Park, U.S. Grant Park, Gabriel Park, Mt. Tabor Park, Irving Park, Portland Heights Park, and Arbor Lodge Park.

Can I register as an individual/substitute/team?  Yes. We will help place you on a team if you do not have one. Before regular season play begins if you register without a team name, we will contact you about teams looking for players.
See the Open Night Play schedule on the left side of this page. After the regular season play has begun your name is available to captains looking for substitutes or additional players. Visit www.wtt.com to register!

Note to substitute players:  Once you have competed twice for a team (played in any two team matches), you are considered a member of that team. You must have an NTRP or self rating equal to or lower than the team rating you intend to compete.

What is the cost?  Summer 2010 the fee is $330/team. Once check per team is collected either at the captain's meeting or once the season begins. Typically teams divide the fee among the whole team, or approx. $27-33 per person. Besides a whole lotta fun, this includes playing in an organized league with an opportunity to advance beyond the local level, court fees, tennis balls and discounts to local tennis services. Team checks are due by Friday, July 2, 2010. Please make payable to: GPTC (Greater Portland Tennis Council). Mail to: Portland WTT, 3439 NE Sandy Blvd #647, Portland OR  97232.

League winners qualify for a National Qualifier?
Winning teams advance to the WTT National Qualifiers. Your team is eligible to participate in a National Qualifier for up to one year from the end date of your league. For every four (4) teams in any official World Team Tennis (WTT) local league division, one (1) team will be eligible to participate in a National Qualifier. Click here for more details.
