Who the GPTC Supports
Here are some of the tennis groups that the GPTC gives financial support to:

* 'T' is for Tennis - The GPTC's new program was started in Portland Public Schools to provide tennis, physical education and life skills during school hours to low income children in the Head Start program at four area schools. In 2009, the GPTC obtained a a USTA Recreational Grant to help support equipment and operating expenses. Over 400 children were served during the 2008-09 school year.

*High School Tennis grants - The GPTC knows that there are some expenses associated with high school tennis programs. With school budgets tightening, the GPTC has teamed up with Players Racquet Shop West to offer $50 vouchers to high school coaches to use for balls or accessories for their teams. Every year, the GPTC offers up to 20 of these vouchers for coaches in Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington county. If you are interested in obtaining a voucher for your team, please contact GPTC President Dana Barnes at
danabarnes10s@comcast.net.

*Special Olympics Programs - The GPTC teams up with local Parks and Recreation programs and helps them run Special Olympics programs. Some of the funds the GPTC provides are used to purchase equipment and supplies to help run these programs. The Lake Oswego Tennis Center has become an avid supporter of Special Olympics and has used the GPTC to help continue their successful program.

* World Team Tennis - The GPTC oversees the Portland World Team Tennis League. Shawn Alford runs the league and funds from the GPTC, along with team fees and help from the Portland Parks & Recreation, help make World Team Tennis one of the most enjoyable tennis activities in the summer! For more information on World Team Tennis, please contact Shawn Alford at wtt@greaterportlandtenniscouncil.com.

* Portland Parks Tennis Association (PPTA) - The PPTA is a non-profit, volunteer based organization established to promote and develop the growth of tennis as a means of healthful recreation and physical fitness and to increase the investment in public tennis in the Portland metro area. Each December, the PPTA organizes the O'Tennisbaum Tournament held at the Portland Tennis Center. To help offset costs of the tournament, the GPTC donated money to the PPTA for O'Tennisbaum. For more information on the PPTA, please visit their website at
www.pdxparkstennis.org.

* Racquet and Shoe Drive - Former GPTC Board Member Glenn Good is organizing a tennis racquet and shoe drive for the 2010 high school season. Collection boxes will be at various tennis clubs around town and the racquets and shoes will be given to coaches at the GPTC Coaches Clinic on February 6. The GPTC donated money to help string racquets, put on new grips, and get them into playing condition. If you are a coach and are in need of shoes and racquets for your team, please contact Glenn Good at
